Sand Blasting
Sand blasting traditionally uses silica sand as the abrasive medium. However, due to health risks associated with crystalline silica (such as silicosis), it is increasingly being replaced by safer alternatives.
- Mechanism: High-pressure air or water carries the sand particles, hitting the surface to strip away contaminants.
- Best for: Heavy-duty rust removal, stripping thick layers of old paint from metal, and cleaning masonry or stone.
- Pros: Highly effective for deep cleaning and creating a rough profile on hard metals.
- Cons: Health hazards (silica dust) and high environmental impact.
